Last Modified: September 23, 2022

Hunting Island State Park
Hunting Island State Park

Since 1935 Hunting Island, a 20 sq. km solitary semi-tropical barrier island has been classified as a state park. Although it is one of the fewest undeveloped Sea Islands yet every year more than a million nature lovers rush to this place to quench their thirst of nature exploration.

Most interestingly or you can say ironically, a number of travel publications have featured the beach of this park. Again, the beach made its own room in the list of the 2013 top 25 beaches in the USA surveyed by TripAdvisor.

Finding the park to be an increasing center of attraction to the millions, today we have decided to come up with an impartial delineation of it. Going through it you can learn how blessed the place is with many natural properties and how it can fill your day with bliss. Here we go!

Island State Park Location

This naturally luxuriant park is situated 24 km east from Beaufort, South Carolina, USA. To be more specific, it’s located in between Fripp Island and Harbour Island.

Hunting Island State Park Properties at a glance

Lighthouse

Do you know why the park is so well known? It’s because of its having a historic lighthouse from the 19th century. The lighthouse is ace for two reasons:

First of all, it is the mere lighthouse in South Carolina that allows public access. Secondly, you can climb to the top using its steep staircase. Although the climbing session is tiresome yet once you are at the pinnacle, your heart will want to jump down amid the celestial beauty of the surrounding nature.

Beach

You are already partially introduced to the beach in the intro section. It’s time to take you to its deep.

It’s basically a 4 miles or 6.4 km beach that is enriched with copious borders in the campground and central areas. O.o..one vital thing to tell you that the shore is basically consumed towards the southern part; so you must heed to the north so see its beauty to the fullest.

Lagoon

Have you any idea what a lagoon actually is? Whether it’s a big pond or a lake? No, it’s neither a pond nor a lake rather a stretch of water, which is separated from the sea by a coral reef or a low sandbank. Keep in mind that the water is salty, so ….. you already know what not to do, right?

The last thing about the lagoon is, it’s almost 3.2 km in length and is luxuriant with natural beauty.

Campsite

You will be amazed to learn that this island has a total of 100 campsites available for your recreation with family and friends. Every campsite offers you the advantages of fresh water, restroom, electricity and beach walkway.

Playground

Just in the middle of the campground there is a playground with all the playground equipment available. No matter whether you’re a mere child or an adult, it has all the facilities for your recreation.

Nature center

Visiting the center you can see live animals and pass some good moments with them. In addition, regularly scheduled programs take place to intensify your enjoyment to a great extent.

Another exciting thing about the nature center is that it has a tackle loaner program. As a part of the program, it lends you out reels and rods to be used on the pier. Note it down that the program runs between 9:00 am and 4:30 pm.

Picnic shelter

If you have been planning for a reunion of family members, friends, relatives or colleagues, the picnic shelter of the park can be an ideal place for you. The shelter has got all the facilities to make the picnic funnier.

Park store and gift shop

The only park store of the state park is situated at the campground and is in your service for 24*7. From the store you can have some grocery items, snacks, souvenirs and drinks.

Unlike the park store, the gift shop that is basically well-known as the lighthouse gift shop is not in service year-round. Instead, it remains in operation only in the peak-season with various types of gifts, souvenirs and obviously snacks.

Pier

The long pier that goes amid the beautiful nature adds extra thrill to your campaign or picnic. It serves you in two mid-blowing ways.

First of all, it takes you to the deeper part of the island to let you have a closer look of the pacific nature. Besides, sitting on the edge of it you can fish to your heart’s content. The place is so famous for fishing that it is popularly addressed as Paradise Fishing Pier.

Wireless internet access

The entire campground, to be specific – the park visitor center, park store and lighthouse shop offer you Wi-Fi facility for free so that you can be connected with the near and dear, far distant from you.

Things to do at a glance

  1. Cross the 167 steps of the lighthouse to reach its top and enjoy a beautiful morning or evening.
  2. Walk along the beach in the early morning to see the sunrise and collect washed sea shells and shark teeth.
  3. Visit the Marsh Boardwalk in the afternoon and wait to enjoy one of the best sunset seeing of your life.
  4. Pay a visit to the nature center to see the wild animals live, especially the giant alligators, deer, loggerhead turtles, rattlesnakes, raccoons, diamondback and a wide variety of birds.
  5. Take a ferry towards St. Philips Island to enjoy the beach and to see the wildlife in its own way.
  6. Involve in any of the following or all – fishing, boating, paddling, swimming, geocaching, biking, birding, hiking etc.

Final words

To sum up, Hunting Island State Park is a piece of heavenly kingdom on the earth. Paying a solitary visit, you can explore a completely new version of you. Again, coming together with near and dear you can tie the relationship more tightly.
